Timber Hitch

The timber hitch is an important hitch, especially for dragging a heavy object like a log. It will hold firmly so long as there is a steady pull: slacking and jerking may loosen it. This hitch is also useful when two timbers are "sprung" together. When it is used for dragging, a simple hitch should be added near the front end of the object to guide it.

1. Begin by passing the end of the rope over the log.

2. Continue around the log.

3. Bend the end of the rope around the standing part of the rope.

4. Then twist the end of the rope around itself three or more times.

5. Tighten the knot against the log. Completed timber hitch.

6. Add an additional half hitch near the end of the log to increase the ropes grip on the log and help you keep the end of the log from digging into the earth as you haul it along.
